Q: What is your title at the Gene B. Glick Company?
A: I am a service coordinator at Hammond Elderly Apartments in Hammond, Indiana.
Q: How long have you been with the company?
A: I started with the Gene B. Glick Company in October 2017.
Q: What brought you to Glick? Why did you want to work here?
A: Hammond Elderly Apartments is close to my home. I wanted to work for Glick because the company has outstanding employee reviews on Glassdoor and other social media sites.
Q: What has kept you here?
A: The relationship that I have built with the staff, residents and vendors.
Q: How did you make your way into this industry?
A: My guidance counselor in high school informed me that there were not many men in the social service field and that it would be a very rewarding career. Throughout my life, it has always been a privilege to help others. Working with people one-on-one was just the perfect fit for me.
Q: What training/education/background did you bring with you?
A: I majored in social work at Missouri Western University in St. Joseph, Missouri. I now have over 20 years of case management experience. Substance abuse, homelessness, HIV, domestic violence, veterans, disabilities, youth and seniors are just a few of the populations that I have served.
Q: What do you do in your role?
A: As a service coordinator, I assist the residents with resources that can make their lives easier. I provide the residents with someone to talk to and I try to help them resolve any issues they might be experiencing. I also assist with lease recertification.
Q: How do you describe your role to friends and family?
A: I tell my friends and family that I assist residents with maintaining their housing and becoming self-sufficient.
Q: Why is your role/the work you do at Glick important?
A: Residents often don’t know about community resources that are available to them. As the service coordinator, I bring these resources back to Hammond Elderly and I share them with the residents.
Q: What would surprise people about your role/the work you do?
A: I take my position seriously and I care what happens to the residents.
Q: What part(s) of your job do you like the most?
A: I really like having the ability to help others. I like knowing that my residents have a safe and secure place to live at the end of the day and resources to make their lives a little bit easier. I also take comfort in having the trust and the respect of the residents. Some of our residents lack family or friends, so I take pride in filling those roles for our residents who do not have support systems.
Q: What has surprised you the most about working at Glick?
A: The length of time employees stay with the company.
Q: Where are you from originally?
A: I’m originally from Harvey, Illinois. I now live in Dolton, Illinois.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I am a die-hard Chicago sports fan. I enjoy attending Bears, Cubs, White Sox and Bulls games. I also enjoy hanging out with family and friends.
Q: What would surprise Glick team members about you?
A: In college, my favorite songs were “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks and “Just Like Jessie James” by Cher.
Q: If you won the lottery and didn’t have to worry about money, how would you fill your time (e.g., dream job, hobbies, causes)?
A: I would travel the world visiting countries that I have never been to before. I would also donate a lot of money to various charities.
Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
Q: Do you live life by any certain motto or philosophy?
A: Kindness is not an act – it is a lifestyle.
